Tropical Turmeric Smoothie

The hot weather we are having lately makes me want to drink more smoothies.  If you’re in the same boat, give this Tropical Turmeric Smoothie a try.

This smoothie is packed with nutrition and anti-inflammatory ingredients like turmeric, kale, hemp hearts, and avocado, but has a slightly sweet and tropical flavor thanks to the pineapple, coconut and vanilla protein powder.  It’s  a true meal in a glass that I like to enjoy for breakfast on a hot morning.

Why Turmeric?

You might wonder, why I would decide to put turmeric in a smoothie recipe, since this golden spice is more commonly used in curries and stews.

Turmeric is a power-house spice.  The active component, curcumin, has potent anti-inflammatory effects.  Curcumin has been shown to reduce inflammation as well as many pharmacological drugs such as Aspirin or Motrin, but without the negative impacts of the drugs.  It’s also packed with antioxidants that can protect against free radical damage in the body.

So, I say, why not try to sneak some of that goodness in wherever we can?

Plus, it tastes delicious in here.

P.S. If you want to learn how to make your own coconut milk from scratch, you can do that here.

Total time
This slightly sweet, tropical smoothie harnesses the anti-inflammatory power of turmeric and makes a great breakfast on a hot day.
Recipe type: Juices and Smoothies
Serves: 1 serving
  • ¾ cup coconut milk
  • 1 scoop sprouted protein powder
  • 1 cup frozen pineapple
  • ½ avocado
  • Handful of kale/spinach leaves
  • 2 Tbsp hemp seeds
  • ¼ tsp dry turmeric
  • 1 Tbsp shredded coconut
  • 2-3 ice cubes
  1. Place all ingredients in blender and blend on high for 1-2 minutes or until creamy and smooth. Add more ice/coconut milk to achieve desired consistency.
I used Brad King's Ultimate Vegan Energy Protein powder. It has no sweeteners, is vanilla flavored and has the added benefit of a serving of maca powder.
